QUFA's Amalgamation Vote

Dear Members,

At the Spring General Meeting on Monday, John Holmes announced the results of last week's vote on the amalgamation of the two QUFA bargaining units - the Faculty, Librarian and Archivist Bargaining Unit (FLABU) and the Sessional Adjunct Bargaining Unit (SABU).

Based on the votes cast, the results were:

  • For FLABU: In favour 65.5%, opposed 32.7%, abstained 1.8%
  • For SABU: In favour 92.9%, opposed 4.8%, abstained 2.3%
  • Of all the votes cast, 84% were cast by FLABU members.

Both QUFA and the University agreed in principle to amalgamate the two bargaining units and formal approval will be completed by June 30th, 2007. Approval for QUFA required both FLABU and SABU independently vote in favour of amalgamation - this was the result of our vote. We will soon be hearing from the University.

Once the University formally approves, the amalgamation will come into effect on July 1, 2007, and any bargaining after that will be for a single Collective Agreement. In the meantime, the two separate Collective Agreements (FLABU's and SABU's) will remain in effect until their expiry in 2008.

In addition to QUFA's existing website information on amalgamation, we are preparing an amalgamation FAQ page. The current website information on amalgamation can be found here.
