This email serves as the one month notification to remind you that following consultation with the University and QUFA through the JCAA for the Queen’s-QUFA Collective Agreement, the Office of Research Ethics Compliance will be implementing mandatory research ethics training for all research team members, including faculty, librarians and archivists starting on December 2, 2019. All faculty, librarians, archivists, and research team members applying for ethics clearance will be required to complete the Course on Research Ethics (CORE Tutorial) and provide evidence of ethics training by uploading a CORE completion certificate into the TRAQ ethics application system for all new applications.
The Course on Research Ethics (CORE tutorial) provides an applied training approach to the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS 2 (2018). The Secretariat released the new version of the TCPS 2 (2018) on August 15, 2019. The TCPS 2 (2018) is the Canadian guideline for the ethical conduct of research involving humans. To ensure compliance with the TCPS 2 (2018), the Office of Research Ethics Compliance is mandating CORE training for all researchers at Queen’s University. The Office of Research Ethics Compliance is currently in the process of updating all of the links to the TCPS 2 (2018) in our application forms, guidelines and policies; however, we do appreciate your patience as we work to update this information.
This one-time training requirement will take approximately three hours to complete. Understanding the demanding schedule of researchers, the Office of Research Ethics Compliance provided the first notification six months in advance of implementing this new training requirement. Starting on December 2, 2019 any NEW Ethics applications that are submitted without evidence of ethics training for all team members will be returned to the applicant with a request to complete the mandatory ethics training. This requirement will not be retroactive and will only impact NEW applications submitted for ethics review.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CORE CERTIFICATE VIA EMAIL. The Office of Research Ethics Compliance does not have the capacity to link the CORE certificate to your TRAQ profile at this time. We are working on strategies to minimize the workload associated having to attach your CORE certificate to each individual ethics application and we will communicate any process changes as necessary.
If you have any questions or concerns reach out to Jennifer Couture, Manager, Research Ethics Compliance, 613-533-6000 x 78223, email@example.com.
Please note that ethics training is currently mandatory for all hospital-based researchers as per current hospital policies. We do accept Good Clinical Practice and the Biomedical Ethics Tutorial (CITI) as equivalent ethics training modules.
