Announcements: Virtual QUFA Member Meeting on Dec 8 to Discuss the New Legal Framework of Bargaining

TO: All Members of Queen’s University Faculty Association (QUFA) Faculty, Librarians and Archivists
Date: December 1, 2022

Dear QUFA Members,

We are inviting you to attend a virtual Member meeting a week from today at 10am to review the impact of the repeal of Bill 124 (wage restraint legislation) on our bargaining with Queen’s. On November 29th, Justice Markus Koehnen declared the wage restraint law “void and of no effect” meaning it no longer governs how we negotiate compensation. The Ford government has a few legal options available to it and they have indicated their intention to appeal. We hope to know more about their plans by the time we meet next week.

In the meantime, we are proceeding to negotiate as we indicated to you in the meeting on November 21st. Specifically, we are working with mediator Eli Gedalof beginning December 3rd and continuing on December 4th, 6th, 10th and 11th. If we are not successful with the mediator, we will set dates in January to work with conciliator Greg Long. While we’re actively in mediation, we cannot discuss the details of proposals and counter-proposals with you but we can talk generally about bargaining goals and the legal context we’re working in.

This meeting is open to all members of the QUFA Bargaining Unit. There may be motions brought forward from the floor related to bargaining at this meeting.

Please RSVP to ep43@queensu.ca  to indicate your intention to attend and to receive the zoom link.

Regards,

Chantal Brunette
Secretary
